The series of tummy massage strokes recommended by Loving Touch are Paddling Down, Knee to Tummy Push and Hands of the Clock. Paddling Down: place palms of your hands on the baby's abdomen, making scooping strokes downward, alternating one hand after the other like a water wheel. Knee to Tummy Push: place your hands on the outside of the baby's thighes, cupping the sides of the knees, gently push the legs toward the tummy and hold for 3 to five seconds, release and repeat several times. Hands of the Clock: one hand follows the other in a clockwise circle around the abdomen in a smooth, continuous movement (it is very important to move in a clockwise motion).
An additional resource for colicky infants is The Happiest Baby on the Block by Dr. Harvey Karp. He recommends using the 5-S's...swaddle, hold on his/her side, swing back and forth, shush as loud as the baby is crying, and sucking on a pacifier [the baby, not you :o)]. Best of luck...it will pass.
