As certified Infant Massage Instructors we are all looking for ways to teach parents how to massage their babies to promote bonding, relaxation, communication and physiologic stimulation. We teach in the community, in homes, in groups, and one-on-one. We all have unique ways we are able to reach parents teach then the art of infant massage.
As both child life specialists and certified infant massage instructors, we have opportunities to teach in the healthcare environment. We are focused on helping parents feel empowered to use the power of touch to relieve their babies’ stress and pain related to treatments.
When a parent finds themselves caring for their baby in a hospital environment, caregiving looks different — typical routines are disrupted and tasks such as diaper changes, feedings and bathing often become a joint effort between hospital staff and parent. Parents may have to choose between bonding moments such as rocking or reading with medical care such as meeting with their doctors or learning how to administer a medication.
We want parents to embrace opportunities to continue bonding with their baby despite being in a medical-focused setting. Parents can provide their baby with something no one else can –their baby knows their voice, scent, and touch. In an environment where babies may experience stress related to noise, stimulation, and pain, parents use infant massage to provide comfort and connection.
In the hospital there are opportunities to teach parents in one-on-one settings and in groups. When providing groups, we are able to partner with music therapy. During these groups, music therapists enhance the mood of the room and match affect by playing the guitar which provides a quiet calm or leading a nursery song which encourages playful interactions. Certified Infant massage instructors demonstrate infant massage strokes and provide developmental support to parents. For a small moment, parents are given an opportunity to focus solely on the bond they have with their baby. While medical care is a priority for the parents, they are given permission to prioritize deepening their attachment with their baby. After learning infant massage, the parent has this unique skill they can use throughout their journey.
